Obverse description A plain cross with splayed arms occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend reads HLOTARIVS IMPERI (Lothair, Emperor), rendered in Carolingian majuscule lettering and distributed around the circumference. The die-work is characteristic of early ninth-century Frankish hammered coinage, with bold, slightly uneven letter forms typical of the palatine workshop.
