Additional information

This coin documents one of the more consequential political arrangements in medieval European history: the alliance between the papacy and the Carolingian dynasty that Leo III had personally cemented when he crowned Charlemagne emperor on Christmas Day, 800. After Charlemagne's death in January 814, Leo continued striking in the name of the new emperor Louis — maintaining the joint coinage convention despite Louis having no particular involvement in its initiation. Leo himself died in June 816, making this a narrow two-year window of issue.
