Obverse description A Carolingian monogram, composed of interlaced letters forming the name LEO, occupies the central field within a beaded inner circle. The monogram is rendered in bold relief in the hammered style typical of early medieval papal coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the beaded circle, reading LEO PA and SCS PETRVS, invoking Pope Leo and Saint Peter as joint authorities of the issue. A cross pattée serves as a dividing mark within the legend.
