Obverse description Within a beaded inner circle, the Carolingian-style imperial monogram of Emperor Otto I occupies the central field, composed of interlaced letters in relief characteristic of early medieval hammered coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the inner beaded border, reading OTTO followed by a cross and IOANNES PAPA, asserting the joint authority of emperor and pope. The flan is irregular in form, typical of hand-struck deniers of the period, with the die impression slightly off-center. The overall design reflects the Ottonian tradition of combining imperial and ecclesiastical symbology on papal coinage struck at Rome.
