Obverse description Central field dominated by a plain Greek cross with expanded terminals, set within a plain inner circle. The cross divides the field into four equal quadrants, each left unadorned. A circular legend in uncial Latin characters surrounds the inner circle, reading I DE CLAROMOnTE, identifying the issuer as John of Clermont. The overall design is characteristic of French feudal billon deniers of the early fourteenth century, executed in the hammered technique with irregular flan.
