Obverse description Central field dominated by a plain Latin cross with equal arms extending nearly to the inner beaded circle. The cross is bold and simply rendered in the hammered billon style characteristic of 13th-century French feudal coinage. A circular legend runs between the inner beaded circle and the outer border, reading IOHANNES COMES, identifying the issuer as John, Count of Chalon. The lettering is executed in uncial characters, with pellet stops separating the legend.
