Obverse description The field is dominated by the emperor's name and title arranged in cruciform fashion, with the letters distributed across the four quadrants formed by an implied cross. Beaded wedges fill each corner angle, and the whole design is contained within a beaded inner circle. The inscription, rendered in rustic Latin capitals, reads AVGVSTVS CL / H / DIG / N, referencing the emperor's imperial dignity. The hammered flan is irregular in outline, characteristic of Carolingian-tradition coinage struck at Pavia. The overall style is archaic and epigraphic, with no figurative portraiture.
