Obverse description Central field dominated by the royal Karolingian-style monogram of King Henry I, composed of interlaced capital letters forming a cross-shaped cipher. The letters of the king's name are distributed within and around the monogram in a characteristic Ottonian hammered-coinage arrangement. The coin's surface is irregular, consistent with hand-struck production, and the flan exhibits the typical slightly uneven shape of early medieval deniers. A beaded or toothed border frames the design.
