| Reverse description | The central field within a beaded circle is dominated by a bold Carolingian imperial monogram, composed of interlaced letters forming the name HLOTHARIVS, executed in the characteristic cross-shaped monogram style of the Frankish imperial tradition. The epithet PIVS and the emperor's name HLOTHARIVS I are distributed in a circular Latin legend around the beaded inner circle, between it and the outer beaded border. The die-work is typical of mid-ninth-century Roman hammered silver, with the monogram rendered with deliberate clarity as an assertion of imperial authority alongside papal prerogative. |
