| Obverse description | Central field occupied by a monogram of GERVASI, composed of interlaced letters in the Carolingian monogram tradition, set within a plain inner circle. The monogram is boldly rendered in high relief typical of 11th-century French episcopal coinage. A circular legend surrounds the inner circle, reading GERVASI ARCHIPRAEƧVLIS, identifying Archbishop Gervais of Reims. The flan is irregular, as is characteristic of hammered billon deniers of this period. |
