| Obverse description | Central field features a stylized castle or keep motif rendered in a schematic, Romanesque manner, with a pronounced central tower flanked by smaller turrets and decorative pellets at the battlements. The architectural device is characteristic of the châtelain coinage of the Vendôme-Châteaudun region. The legend GΛVFRID, referencing the issuing viscount Geoffrey VI, runs around the periphery in retrograde or irregular Latin capitals. The flan is irregular and slightly clipped, typical of hammered feudal billon coinage of the mid-thirteenth century. The overall style is archaic and bold, with deep relief on the castle motif. |
