Additional information

Geoffrey of Grandpré held the see of Châlons-sur-Marne from 1237 until his death in 1247, one of the lesser-documented episcopates of the mid-thirteenth century French church. The bishops of Châlons exercised genuine comital authority in this period, minting in their own name as temporal lords rather than purely ecclesiastical figures — a right the chapter defended vigorously against Capetian encroachment throughout the century.
