Obverse description Central field bears a stylized episcopal crozier or monogram device enclosed within a single inner circle, rendered in a bold, somewhat schematic Romanesque manner characteristic of 11th-century episcopal billon coinage. The monogram incorporates interlaced letter-forms associated with the bishop's name. Surrounding the inner circle, a retrograde Latin legend in uncial or proto-Gothic letterforms reads GALTERYS PRESYL, identifying the issuing bishop Gauterus II. The flan is irregularly shaped and slightly cupped, consistent with hand-hammered production of the period. A small cross pattée appears in the legend at the top of the coin.
