Obverse description Central field displays a large monogram or letter FR (for Fredericus) in bold relief within a beaded inner circle, surrounded by the legend IMPERATOR distributed around the periphery. The design is executed in the simple, bold style characteristic of Hohenstaufen-period Sicilian hammered coinage. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, typical of hand-struck medieval deniers. The lettering is rendered in Romanesque capitals consistent with early thirteenth-century Norman-Sicilian monetary tradition.
