Obverse description Hammered silver denier of irregular flan struck at Zurich under Duke Ernest I or Ernest II of Swabia. The obverse displays a stylized ducal portrait or bust in low relief at the center, rendered in the crude, schematic manner characteristic of early eleventh-century German feudal coinage. The surrounding field is bounded by an inner beaded circle. The circumferential legend reads +DVX ERNST in Latin capitals, identifying the issuing duke.
