Obverse description Central field bears a plain cross with one globule (bezant) in each of the four angles formed by the cross arms, the whole enclosed within a beaded inner circle (grenetis). A circular Latin legend runs between the inner and outer beaded borders, reading the duke's name and title. The design is characteristic of Carolingian-derived Ottonian denier coinage, with the cross motif emphasizing Christian authority.
