Obverse description Central field displays the letters IVS arranged within a small beaded inner circle, surrounded by radiating lines forming a stylised decorative motif. The peripheral legend ✠ CONANVS runs clockwise around the coin, naming Duke Conan III of Brittany. The flan is irregular in shape, as is typical of hammered medieval billon coinage, with uneven striking visible across the surface. The overall design is characteristic of Carolingian-influenced feudal deniers of the early twelfth century.
