Obverse description Central field occupied by the Carolingian royal monogram of Charles (Karolus), composed of interlaced capital letters in high relief, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The monogram displays the characteristic Carolingian interlace of the letters K, A, R, O, L, and S. A circular legend in Latin capital letters runs outside the beaded border, invoking the king's title by divine grace. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, typical of hammered Carolingian silver coinage of the period.
