Obverse description A plain cross with a pellet in each of the four quarters, all contained within a beaded inner circle. The cross arms extend to the inner circle, creating a bold central device typical of Carolingian denier coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the beaded circle within the outer border of the flan. The die work is characteristic of 9th-century Italian hammered silver production, with a broad, irregular flan and somewhat uneven strike.
