| Reverse description | Central field displays a plain cross pattee set within a beaded inner circle, its arms extending toward the border in the standard Carolingian denier format. The cross divides the inner field into four quarters, each plain. The surrounding legend VENDENIS CΛSTR◊ runs along the outer margin between the beaded circles, introduced by a cross pattee, identifying the mint as the castle of Vendôme. The lettering is in Carolingian majuscule, characteristic of royal issues struck under the Edict of Pîtres (864), which standardized coinage production at designated royal mints throughout West Francia. |
