Obverse description Carolingian royal monogram of Charles II (Karolus) occupying the central field, composed of interlaced letters in the characteristic Carolingian style, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend reads in Latin capitals, commencing with a cross pattée. The overall design is typical of the Palace School monetary reform coinage introduced under the Edict of Pîtres (864), with bold, deeply struck letterforms characteristic of hammered Carolingian silver.
