| Obverse description | Carolingian royal monogram of Charles II (Karolus) occupying the central field, formed by the interlaced letters C, A, R, L, and V, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The monogram is rendered in bold relief characteristic of Carolingian hammered coinage. A Latin legend encircles the outer field, invoking the king's title by divine grace. The flan is irregular in shape, as typical of ninth-century West Frankish deniers struck by hand. |
