Obverse description Central field features a plain cross with four pellets in the angles, enclosed within a raised inner circle. The legend CΛRLVS REX FR, reading 'Charles, King of the Franks,' is arranged in Carolingian majuscule letters around the inner circle, introduced by a cross pattée. The entire design is bounded by a beaded outer border. The lettering is bold and characteristic of the Carolingian hammered denier tradition, with slight irregularities consistent with hand-struck production.
