Obverse description Central field dominated by a stylized cross with a small pellet or ornament at its center, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The cross arms extend nearly to the inner circle, rendered in the bold, simplified style typical of Carolingian hammered coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the inner circle, reading +CARLVS REX FR, identifying Charles II as king of the Franks. The lettering is executed in capital uncial-style characters, with a cross pattée serving as the legend's initial marker. The overall design reflects the standard Temple/Cross type of Carolingian royal deniers.
