| Obverse description | Central field features a plain cross pattée enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend, separated from the central motif by the beaded border, reads ✠ CΛRLVS REX FR in Carolingian majuscule characters, with four pellet-pointed stars interspersed between the letters around the periphery. The cross at the top of the legend serves as an initial mark. The overall style is characteristic of Carolingian hammered coinage, with somewhat irregular striking typical of ninth-century workshop production. |
