Obverse description Plain cross pattée at center, its arms extending nearly to the inner beaded circle. The cross divides the legend CAROLVS REX, rendered in Carolingian majuscule letters, into four segments distributed around the inner field. The outer border consists of a raised beaded circle near the rim. The die-work is characteristic of ninth-century Carolingian hammered coinage, with bold, slightly irregular lettering typical of the Palace Mint.
