Obverse description Central Carolingian royal monogram of KRLS (Karolus), composed of interlaced letters forming a cross-like cipher within a beaded inner circle surrounded by a radiate ring. The monogram is rendered in the characteristic Carolingian style, with individual letter elements clearly articulated in the field. The circular legend, reading clockwise, surrounds the entire design and identifies the issuer as Charles, king by the grace of God.
