Obverse description The central field features the Carolingian royal monogram of Charles (Karolus), composed of interlaced letters in the characteristic Carolingian style, set within a beaded inner circle. The monogram is rendered in bold relief typical of hammered Carolingian coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the beaded circle, reading clockwise from a cross pattée. The overall design reflects the standardized Carolingian denier type introduced under Charlemagne and continued under Charles II (the Bald).
