Obverse description Central field occupied by the Carolingian royal monogram, composed of the interlaced letters of KAROLUS in relief, enclosed within a plain inner circle surrounded by a beaded border. The surrounding annular legend, beginning with a cross pattée, reads CRATIA D-I REX, identifying Charles as king by divine grace. The design is executed in the characteristic Carolingian hammered style, with the monogram's component letters arranged symmetrically around a central vertical stroke. The coin exhibits the typical irregular flan and variable strike quality associated with ninth- and tenth-century Frankish silver coinage.
