Obverse description A plain cross with a pellet in each of the four quarters occupies the central field, all enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The royal Latin legend CARLVS REX FR, identifying Charles as king of the Franks, is disposed around the periphery, preceded by a cross pattée as an initial mark. The flan is irregular and slightly chipped, characteristic of Carolingian hammered coinage, and the die work displays the bold, angular letterforms typical of ninth- to early tenth-century West Frankish mints.
