Obverse description Central device consisting of a Carolingian monogram of the name KAROLUS within a beaded inner circle, composed of interlaced letters in the characteristic palace-school style. The monogram is rendered in bold relief, occupying the majority of the central field. A circular legend surrounds the inner circle, separated by a plain border, reading the royal titulature. The overall design reflects the standardised Carolingian denier type established by the Edict of Pîtres (864), with the monogram serving as the principal identifier of royal authority.
