Obverse description Central field features an elaborate Carolingian monogram of the name CARLVS (Charles II, the Bald), rendered in interlaced letters within a beaded inner circle. The monogram is composed of angular, interwoven strokes characteristic of the Carolingian royal cipher, filling the field with an intricate symmetrical design. A circular legend surrounds the inner beaded border. The overall style reflects the standardized Carolingian denier type established by the Edict of Pîtres (864), with bold, deeply struck lettering in the surrounding inscription.
