Obverse description Central field occupied by the Carolingian royal monogram of Charles II, composed of interlaced letters forming a cipher, struck in relief within a beaded inner circle. The monogram displays the characteristic interlinking of the letters C, H, A, R, L, U, and S in the Carolingian tradition. A circular Latin legend reading GRATIA D-I REX encircles the beaded border, commencing with a cross pattée. The overall design follows the standard Carolingian denier type introduced under the monetary reform of 864.
