| Obverse description | Central field dominated by a bold Latin cross with a vertical element rising above the horizontal bar, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding annular legend reads CΛRLVS REX, executed in large, somewhat irregular majuscule Latin letters characteristic of Carolingian hammered coinage. A cross pattée precedes the legend as an initial mark. The outer rim is defined by a raised beaded border following the irregular flan edge. The die work is typical of the mid-ninth-century West Frankish royal workshop, with robust letter forms and a prominent central cross motif asserting royal authority. |
