Obverse lettering ✠ CRΛTIΛ D-I REX

Reverse description A plain Greek cross with equal arms occupies the central field, set within a beaded inner circle. The four quadrants formed by the arms of the cross are plain and unadorned. A circular Latin legend naming the Avallon mint surrounds the beaded circle, with a cross pattée serving as the initial mark. The die engraving is bold but somewhat irregular, consistent with provincial Carolingian mint workmanship of the mid-ninth century.
