Obverse description Carolingian royal monogram of Charles II (Karolus) rendered in interlaced letters occupying the central field, enclosed within a single beaded circle. The monogram is composed of the letters C, A, R, L, V, and S arranged in a cruciform interlace design characteristic of Carolingian regal coinage. A circular Latin legend runs between the beaded inner circle and the coin's irregular outer rim, reading clockwise. The overall style is consistent with the standardized Carolingian denier type introduced by the Edict of Pîtres (864).
