Obverse description The central field displays the Carolingian royal monogram of Charles II (Karolus monogram), composed of interlaced letters within a beaded inner circle. The monogram, characteristic of Carolingian coinage, is rendered in raised relief with angular, stylized letterforms typical of ninth-century hammered silver. A circular Latin legend surrounds the beaded border, reading clockwise from a cross pattee. The flan is irregular and slightly clipped at the edges, consistent with hand-struck Carolingian deniers of the period.
