Obverse description Monogram type die with the royal name CAROLVS arranged in a bold, interlaced cross-form composition filling the entire field. The four capital letters C, A, R, O, L, V, S are distributed in a characteristic Carolingian monogram layout, with large angular letterforms deeply struck in relief. The letter O appears in the upper right quadrant as a distinct circular element. A border of small pellets or beads runs along the inner edge of the irregular round flan, framing the central monogram device. The style is typical of early Carolingian hammered silver coinage produced under Charlemagne.
