Obverse description The entire field is occupied by the royal name CARLVS (Charles) inscribed in two lines in large, bold capital letters across the flat, unadorned field. The lettering is characteristic of early Carolingian epigraphy, with broad strokes and a slightly irregular arrangement. A border of pellets surrounds the inscription along the periphery of the flan. The flan itself is irregular and slightly clipped, typical of hammered silver coinage of the period.
