Obverse description The obverse field bears the royal name CAROLUS arranged in two lines separated by a horizontal bar, rendered in large, bold Latin capitals characteristic of early Carolingian epigraphy. The upper line reads CARO and the lower line reads LVS, with the letters displaying the angular, monumental style typical of Charlemagne's pre-reform coinage. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, consistent with hand-struck hammered silver production of the period. No effigy or figurative motif is present; the design relies entirely on the royal name as the central device.
