| Obverse description | A plain cross with splayed arms occupies the central field, enclosed within a raised beaded inner circle. The surrounding annular field is filled with the royal legend, also bounded by an outer beaded border. The overall composition is typical of the Carolingian reform coinage of Charlemagne, struck with characteristic irregularity of flan and variable die alignment. The lettering is rendered in bold, archaic Latin capitals separated by a cross pattée at the opening of the legend. |
