| Obverse description | Central field displays the royal name CAROLVS arranged in two horizontal lines in large, boldly struck capital letters, characteristic of the early Carolingian epigraphic denier type. The legend reads CARO on the upper line and LVS on the lower line, referencing Charlemagne (Carolus). The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border running along the coin's periphery, typical of Frankish hammered coinage of the late 8th century. The lettering is rendered in a angular, uncial-influenced style consistent with workshop practice at the Le Mans mint during this period. |
