| Obverse description | The obverse bears the royal name CAROLVS REX arranged in two horizontal lines across the field, in bold, square-cut capital letters characteristic of early Carolingian epigraphy. The inscription reads CAR / O in the upper portion and LVS / Rx in the lower portion, with the abbreviated royal title Rx (Rex, meaning King) at the lower right. The lettering fills the flan in a monogram-like disposition, with no effigy or figurative element present. The plain, unadorned field reflects the austere monetary style of Charlemagne's pre-reform coinage. The die work is rough and irregular, typical of hammered silver deniers struck at provincial Carolingian mints. |
