| Obverse description | Two lines of bold, raised Latin inscription filling the field, reading CAR in the upper register and LVS in the lower, rendered in the characteristic broad, rounded Carolingian lettering of the early regal coinage. The letters are large and dominant, occupying the majority of the flan with no border or decorative framing. The planchet is irregular and somewhat crude, consistent with early hammered Carolingian monetary practice. The inscription constitutes an abbreviated rendering of the ruler's name, Carolus (Charles), as was standard on deniers of the first coinage type. |
