| Obverse description | Epigraphic type featuring the royal name CAROLVS disposed across the field in two lines, reading CARO above LVS, executed in bold, angular Carolingian letterforms. The legend fills the entire flan with large, prominent characters, a characteristic feature of the earliest Carolingian denier coinage. The coin is struck on an irregular, roughly circular flan with an irregular beaded border encircling the field. The die-work is vigorous and unrefined, consistent with provincial hammered production of the late eighth century. |
