Obverse description A plain cross occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. Surrounding this inner circle, the royal legend is arranged in capital letters between the inner beaded border and an outer beaded border, with stylized pellets and decorative elements filling the interstices. The lettering is executed in the angular, semi-uncial Carolingian style typical of late 9th-century West Frankish coinage. The overall design reflects the standardized Carolingian denier type established under the monetary reforms of Louis the Pious.
