Obverse description Central field displays a Carolingian monogram composed of the letters of CARLOMAN arranged in an interlaced cruciform design, characteristic of the royal cipher adopted by the West Frankish kings. The monogram is enclosed within a plain inner circle, itself surrounded by a beaded border. The surrounding outer legend reads ✠ GRΛCIΛ DI REX, denoting Carloman as king by divine grace. The flan is irregular in shape, as typical of ninth-century hammered Carolingian deniers. The lettering is executed in the angular, somewhat crude capital style characteristic of monastic mint production of this period.
