Obverse description Central field features a Carolingian royal monogram of Carloman II, formed by interlaced letters in relief, enclosed within a plain inner circle surrounded by a beaded border. The monogram, a ligature of the letters of KARLUS, is rendered in the characteristic Carolingian style. The surrounding outer field carries the Latin legend divided by the monogram arms. The coin is struck on an irregularly shaped flan typical of ninth-century Carolingian hammered silver coinage. The die work is bold and angular, consistent with ecclesiastical workshop production.
