Obverse description Central field occupied by the royal monogram of Carloman I, composed of the interlaced letters C, A, R, L, M, and N in a bold, raised Carolingian monogram style. A horizontal bar surmounts the monogram, a common device on Carolingian regal issues denoting royal authority. The flan is irregular in shape, typical of hand-struck early medieval silver coinage, with a plain inner border and no surrounding legend.
