Obverse description Central field occupied by a bold Carolingian royal monogram composed of the interlaced letters C, A, R, L, and M, rendered in a distinctive early medieval majuscule style typical of Frankish hammered coinage. The monogram elements are deeply impressed into the flan, with the letters arranged in an overlapping, cruciform-influenced composition. No legend surrounds the monogram; the design fills the field to the irregular flan edge. The die work is characteristic of the early Carolingian reform coinage associated with the joint reign of Carloman I.
